Body of Glass
In a future world of sprawling mega-cities and corporate power, Shira has lost custody of her son to her husband and returns to her home free town of Tikva. One of the town's leaders, sensing danger threatening the town, has secretly built Yod, an illegal cyborg designed to defend it, and Shira is assigned to help him become more human. Interwoven with this story is a second narrative, told to Yod by Shira's mother Malkah: the story of a rabbi in seventeenth-century Prague who creates a clay golem to defend the Jewish community from a pogrom. Body of Glass won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Best Science Fiction Novel in 1993.
