This third volume in the story of Lanny Budd covers the years between 1930 and 1934. It describes the rich American playboy, who had spent much of his life abroad, living in Germany, where he met Hitler, Goering, and Goebbels; in Paris, where his featherbrained wife had established a salon; and on the yacht of the wealthy Jewish financier, who was a relative by marriage. When the Nazi terror broke out, Lanny moved by pity and friendship attempted to get his Jewish friend out of Dachau, and in consequence was imprisoned himself. The book closes with the release of Freddi Robin, broken in body and spirit.
