A Death in the Family is a novel about the events following the sudden death of a man and the effect of his death upon the various members of his family and his friends. The novel begins in the early evening of a May day in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1915, with a telephone call that brings bad news. A man has been killed in an automobile accident. His family—his wife, his children, his mother—must now learn to live with the knowledge of his death and to accept the loss in whatever way each of them can manage. Some of them find solace in religious faith. Others are bewildered and torn by doubt.
