The Rings of Saturn
W. G. Sebald with Michael Hulse (trans.)
#737 of 8,085 books · #436 in Fiction
Won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction (1998).
In August, the month that has since ancient times stood under the influence of Saturn, W. G. Sebald walks through the lonely heathland of the English county of Suffolk, visits dilapidated country houses, talks with old landowners and again and again comes upon the traces of wondrous stories. Thus he tells of the heyday of Victorian country houses, reports from the life of Joseph Conrad, recalls the incredible love of the Vicomte de Chateaubriand, or traces the European silk trade as far as China. In clear and precise language, however, he also records the quiet catastrophes that came about through humankind's violent intervention in this remote stretch of country. In the end, the walking tour thus turns into a passage through a history of the decay of culture and nature.
