Timescape interweaves two timelines. In 1998, facing an ecological catastrophe including runaway marine algae blooms that threaten the world's food supply, a group of British scientists attempts to send a warning back through time using tachyons. Their message reaches Gordon Bernstein, a physicist in 1962-63 California whose experiments are disrupted by mysterious interference. His investigation leads him to the truth: scientists at the end of the century are using subatomic particles to send a message into the past to avert disaster. The novel follows the resulting clash between scientists and bureaucrats and the urgent effort to alter the past to prevent the future catastrophe. Timescape won the 1980 Nebula Award for Best Novel.
