We the People
Die amerikanische Verfassung gehört zu den ältesten der Welt und ist die wichtigste von allen, denn sie definiert bis heute die Grundsätze und Regeln, nach denen der immer noch mächtigste Staat der Welt seit rund 250 Jahren regiert wird. Aber sie ist auch besonders schwer zu ändern. Damit schiebt sie allzu spontanen Eingriffen einen Riegel vor, blockiert aber auch überfällige Reformen. Jill Lepore beschreibt die politischen Kämpfe um diese Verfassung von den frühesten Entwürfen bis in unsere Tage, in denen Präsident Trump dabei ist, das ganze politische System aus den Angeln zu heben. Ob es die Sklaverei ist, das Recht auf Abtreibung oder auf Waffenbesitz - Lepore verwandelt die Verfassungsgeschichte in ein großes historisches Drama um Recht, Macht und Freiheit.
