Shortlisted for the National Book Award for Nonfiction (1981).

One of the first full-length biographies of Willa Cather, left unfinished at the author's death and completed by Leon Edel. True to its subtitle, the book is less concerned with the events of Cather's life than with the light that life casts on her art, tracing the interplay between when and how she wrote her novels and what was happening around her at the time. Its close readings show a careful attentiveness to text, metaphor, and symbol, though readers looking for the particulars of Cather's often eventful life outside her writing will find comparatively little of it here.
